Treatment for childhood cancer brings many challenges – but you are not alone.

From understanding your child’s treatments and medications, to navigating work and home commitments, and looking after your child’s – and your own – physical and emotional wellbeing, there is a lot to juggle during an already stressful time.

We have a wide variety of resources that cover many aspects of receiving treatment for childhood cancer. They have been developed with input from patients, their families and carers, and the health professionals that treat them, to provide reliable information, helpful suggestions, and practical advice for patients and those around them affected by childhood cancer.

We also run a program that improves access to quality care for families outside of Melbourne, helping patients to receive care as close to home as possible at regional centres across Victoria, when it is safe to do so.

PICS resources – during treatment

Our resources to support you during the childhood cancer treatment phase include topics such as:

  • tests, treatments and procedures, and managing the challenges associated with them
  • understanding your child’s changing health and wellbeing needs during treatment
  • information on specific medications used
  • supporting healthy eating and nutrition
  • general tips for parents, families, and friends.

These resources have been developed in a variety of formats, such as factsheets, videos, and handbooks.

Below are some highlighted PICS resources and topics. You can access the full range in our resources library.

The PICS Regional Outreach and Shared Care Program (ROSCP)

Many Victorian children, adolescents, and young adults being treated for paediatric cancer live outside Melbourne and face additional challenges in getting the care they need.

To reduce the burden on families and increase access to quality care outside of Melbourne, the PICS Regional Outreach and Shared Care Program (ROSCP) helps to provide care as close to home as possible at regional centres across Victoria, when it is safe and appropriate to do so.
