The Western & Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service (WCMICS) is part of Victoria’s cancer service improvement network.

WCMICS is guided by a governance group that comprises representatives from 7 public health services, working together to positively impact cancer outcomes for patients in the Western and Central Melbourne region. We achieve this by fostering strong working relationships with partner services and other cancer sector stakeholders to drive change at multiple levels across the health system, locally and statewide.

Optimal Care Clinical Indicators

WCMICS is the lead site for the VICS Implementation Plan focus area to support the effective implementation of Australia’s Optimal Care Pathways (OCPs), leading a statewide project to monitor unwarranted variation against the OCPs.

WCMICS has retrieved evidence from 6 partner health services on their adherence to and implementation of Victoria Department of Health recommended best practice regarding deferred surgical care.

Developing the First Nations Cancer Coordinator role

Scope and build an informed model for an First Nations Cancer Coordinator (FNCC) to serve the needs of Aboriginal Victorians with cancer, through; mapping access to care, collating existing literature; and engaging existing community advisory group

Metropolitan–Regional Engagement Project

LMICS and WCMICS undertook a 2-year project to enhance service integration for patients between the 2 regions, sharing the costs of a project officer in a job-sharing and co-located role.
