A population health approach to mapping skin cancer service delivery in the Loddon Mallee region
Purpose
Partnering with Murray Primary Health Network (PHN) and La Trobe University, LMICS has embarked on an intersectoral two-year project (2023–2025), with 11 other key organisations on a project advisory group. Our goal is for stakeholders across the Loddon Mallee cancer service system to obtain a clear map of skin cancer services, and to identify service gaps and feasible service improvements.
What we did
Through desktop research and stakeholder engagement, LMICS will identify gaps and areas of opportunity for service strengthening across the region. Aligned with the Melanoma Optimal Care Pathways, the project will also incorporate a feasibility study plan for a primary care skin cancer excisions clinic. This is aimed at reducing referrals to hospital that are within the scope of practice for GPs.
Outputs
Our intent is that stakeholders across LMR gain a deeper appreciation of the systemic barriers and enablers that can lead to enhanced local and appropriate care for patients.
Impacts
Aligned with Optimal Care Pathway (OCP) timelines, the project aims to increase awareness and services within health services and primary care agencies across the Loddon Mallee region – ultimately investigating community-led models of timely prevention, detection, treatment, and care.
