Development of the PICS Consumer Participation Framework
The Victorian Cancer Plan 2020–2024 recognises the value of collaboration with patients and their families (consumers) in improving cancer care. PICS consumers are unique, as they include children and young people.
Early in 2021, PICS held 3 workshops with parents/carers and young people to hear about their cancer care experiences, identify areas for improvement, and learn about the best ways to work with families. This resulted in PICS establishing a Consumer Working Group (CWG) that collaborated with PICS to identify principles and practices – ultimately giving rise to the PICS Consumer Participation Framework.
Output
The framework embeds diverse and meaningful consumer participation as a core part of all PICS projects and programs.
It has four main principles:
- Valuing lived experience
- Collaboration
- Embracing diversity and expertise
- Enabling and supporting participation.
