VICS Optimal Care Summits prostate cancer consultation 2020

The VICS’ second strategic consultation on prostate cancer care was held in 2020.

This consultation built on our first prostate cancer summit, in 2016. The summit event was held online, across 4 and 11 December 2020, and was well-attended by both clinicians and consumers. Following the summit, the advisory group below highlighted 4 priorities for immediate action:

Recommendations

  1. Increase the proportion of patients accessing appropriate information and support at diagnosis through existing services and resources
  2. Increase the proportion of patients discussed at a multi-disciplinary team meeting (MDM) or managed and documented by an agreed pathway that is overseen by the multidisciplinary team, to achieve the target participation rate of 85%
  3. Further investigate the factors contributing to variation in access to robotic surgery for lower socio-economic index populations, and develop business cases using local data to demonstrate the cost and patient outcome benefits for public health services
  4. To achieve the 80% target for supportive care screening for people with prostate cancer:
    – Respond better to patients who actively seek help
    – Identify key points in the care pathway when patients could be screened for supportive care needs.
